Have you ever dreamed of visiting Deep Space? Lewis Pinault has. A scientist and budding explorer, Lewis watched the race to the Moon as a young boy and dreamed of exploring distant planets. His boyhood love led him to work with NASA, Lunar Mission One and Mars One. He even applied to join the Mars One programme to colonise Mars. Lewis isn't alone in his desire to see what life might be like on Mars. Mars Ahead is the companion guide to this next frontier of human exploration. In this exciting, colourful narrative, Lewis shows us the key characters involved in the race to Mars, the technologies need to get us there and the latest, cutting-edge research into life on the planet. This is an insider's view on the next great Space Race, from space suits and rovers, to the disaster scenarios would-be explorers have to consider.
Dr Lewis Pinault is based at University College London's Centre for Planetary Sciences. After graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in Political Science and Ocean Engineering, he was awarded the Fulbright scholarship to study Sea-Use Law and Technology at the London School of Economics. Following his work as an engineer and then a consultant, he became a NASA Space Grant Fellow and worked as a NASA subcontractor on asteroid origins and materials. In 1999 he was a NASA delegate to the third UN Conference on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. He works with and advises the teams behind Lunar Mission One and the Airbus Group on Aerospace Innovation.
