The name Marzee refers to intertwined identities. There is Marie-José van den Hout (known as Marzee), the dealer and the individual whose drive and passion makes everything possible. There is Galerie Marzee, the institution with a rich backstory, a fabulous building, and enviable programs. And there is the Marzee Collection, more than 2,500 objects that track the history of Marzee the individual and Marzee the gallery.

This book, with a foreword by Petra Hölscher, chapters by Susan Cummins, Flos Wildschut, and Lizzie Atkins, and photographs by Michiel Heffels, tells the story of the dealer, the gallery, and the collection. In 1978 Marie-José opened the first Galerie Marzee in an old butcher’s shop in Nijmegen, the Netherlands; today the gallery occupies an impressively renovated grain warehouse on the river Waal. Imbued with the powerful minimalism of the building, Marzee the book presents over 300 pieces from the Marzee Collection that have been chosen and arranged by Marie-José van den Hout herself.

Dr. Petra Hölscher studied art history, romance languages, German literature and industrial anthropology at Christian-Albrechts-University, in Kiel. In November 2002 she assumed her current position as a curator—since 2007 senior curator—at Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum. In this position she did and still does create exhibitions about international industrial design and studio jewellery which is always accompanied by a publication. She has also written and co-authored numerous articles and books. She is also responsible for the museum's acquisitions in both fields. Susan Cummings is a jewellery designer based in Ojai, California. Flos Wildschut is an art historian and freelance curator. From a solid base in contemporary visual art, she looks for overlaps with both architecture, landscape architecture and design, but also with other forms of expression, such as music, theatre, dance, film and literature. It is her ambition to share interesting developments, which she signals nationally and internationally, with others. This takes shape in the form of exhibitions and events, publications on contemporary art and artists, advice and juries. Lizzie Atkins is a London-based jeweller, writer, and researcher. After earning a degree in English literature, she went on to study jewellery at Middlesex University under Caroline Broadhead. She is also currently involved in a number of projects with Galerie Marzee.
