Melancholy Witness is the published collection of the images of Seán Hillen’s lauded exhibition of photography, documenting the years of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Combining personality with documentary history, what emerges is a powerful and compelling story of unrest, beauty and change.

Seán Hillen is a photographic artist, born in Co. Down who worked in London and is now based in Dublin. His photocollage works are widely studied and have appeared on the covers of the Royal Photographic Journal and Creative Camera and in 2007 he was commissioned to co-design the Omagh Bomb Memorial. His original photographs from the Troubles era, recently acquired by the National Library of Ireland as The Seán Hillen Collection, are here published for the first time.
