That a vehicle born in the late 1950s and ending production in 1979 would still be owned and driven today was way beyond the expectations of the original manufacturer. Today’s Midget and Sprite owner needs to be aware of the special problems that can emerge through continued use. Just how do you look after and maintain a vehicle that was built last century? This book helps you identify all the things you need to be aware of to avoid trouble. The shortcomings, the odd funny noise, that little something that just does not seem quite right ... here, we sort them out. The book systematically describes all the main components of the Midget/Sprite, and details what can go wrong with each. Being able to identify simple warning signs can keep you ahead of a big repair bill – and possibly save you from being stranded at the roadside.
Trained as a tool maker in the aerospace industry, Terry Horler has a keen interest in all things of an engineering nature. His first Austin-Healey Sprite, a 1959 MkI, was bought from a work colleague in 1969. After considerable repair work, it was sold just nine months later – an action that was soon regretted. The next Sprite came along in 1976, followed by several other Sprites and Midgets. He still owns and drives a 1960 Sprite purchased in 1979, and a 1968 Sprite MkIV purchased in 1984. Together with a colleague, Terry formed the Midget and Sprite Club in 1983, when these cars were at their lowest ebb. Since then, Terry has been a technical consultant for the club, written many articles for the club magazine, formed the Sprite and Midget register, and helped owners with a wide variety of problems. Terry is now the club’s technical documentation officer, dealing with valuations, DVLA re-registration applications, and general technical advice. Terry’s first book, Original Sprite and Midget, was published in 1994, and his Midget & Sprite Essential Buyer’s Guide in 2011.
