Middlesbrough grew up enitrely as a new Victoriain enterprise around the new industries of iron making, shipbuilding and later, chemical manufacuries that accumulated along the banks of the Tees during the nineteenth century.

This splendid selection of over 270 old photographs of Middlesbrough illustrates some of the many changes that occurred in the town over the twentieth century as manufacturing industries matured and developed and began to change again as new demands and technologies appeared.

These nostalgic images show the town and its buildings over those years; its streets, transport, industries, churches and houses. They also show the people at work and play; in factories, schools and at leisure, playing sport or watching celebratory events.

The compilers of the book are both professionals in Middlesbrough's libraries and museums service and all the photographs originate from the town's extensive photographic archives.

Ian Stubbs is assistant curator at the Dorman Museum in Middlesbrough and Jenny Parker is reference librarian at Middlesbrough Central Library.
