The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is one of the largest museums in Greece; its permanent exhibitions include unique masterpieces of ancient Greek art dating from prehistoric times to late antiquity. It holds and interprets artefacts from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, mostly from the city of Thessaloniki but also from the region of Macedonia in general.

JULIA VOKOTOPOULOU was Director of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki from 1982 until her untimely death in 1995. She conducted many excavations in Epirus and Central Macedonia, and supervised the restoration of many monuments including those at Nikopolis, Arta, Thessaloniki and Olynthos, and set up the archaeological museums in Ionnina, Nikopolis and Arta. Her many publications deal mainly with the art, topography and inscriptions of ancient Macedonia and Epirus, and with ancient metalworking.
