Miles Away is the story of a dozen pivotal Newcastle United fixtures told from the perspective of a fan without a ticket. The journey spans five unforgettable decades – from Keegan’s Entertainers to knife-edge promotion races, to bruising relegation battles and a terrace hero’s unforgettable final strike. It builds towards a dramatic climax: the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years and a famous Wembley win for Eddie Howe’s Black and White Army. The 12 games unfold alongside the adventures of a supporter following the Magpies away from the turnstiles. Along the way, he encounters a technological revolution (moving from print and Teletext to the smartphone age), Harry Potter, Esther Rantzen, a European Cup semi-final shoot-out in another sport, plus a glorious afternoon with the London Geordies. With only 55,000 tickets for a home game, there are countless supporters living the drama from the outside, proving distance is no barrier to an enduring passion for your team.

After two decades in newspaper and magazine journalism, including the weekly football publication Match, Gary Sherrard spent 16 years at a title-winning club in another sport. His first book, The Wilderness Years: Newcastle United 1978–84 (Pitch 2025), charts his formative years on the terraces in the era between the club’s 1950s glories and the Entertainers of the 90s.
