‘Mrs Maydwell’s Coffee Palace is a fascinating, fictionalised biography telling the true story of a remarkable woman who defied the conventions of Victorian society, and broke free from the shackles of marriage and domesticity.

Born in the 1860s to a modest farming family in the picturesque dales of north-east England, Christiana Whitfield challenges expectations with her sharp wit and unyielding spirit. As she rebels against her family's traditions and navigates the tumult of her romantic entanglements, Christiana embarks on a thrilling globe-trotting adventure.  Her journey is marked by chaos, heartache, and a relentless quest for autonomy. As she seeks her true self amid a world determined to confine her, Christiana becomes an unforgettable symbol of empowerment and resilience.

Joanna Bailey grew up in Durham City in the North East of England. An English graduate, she dedicated over twenty years to teaching in sixth form colleges, eventually becoming a Principal and the CEO of a multi-academy trust. Now retired, Joanna divides her time between the North Yorkshire Coast and Murcia, Spain and enjoys reading, genealogy and a wide variety of arts and crafts.  She previously co-authored two A-level revision guides.  This is her first novel.
