Alcohol problems among Native Americans are severe and widespread. Statistics report that the rate of alcohol-related deaths is about eight times greater for Native Americans than for the U.S. population as a whole. THOMAS D. WATTS is a Professor in the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Arlington. His earlier works include The Societal Learning Approach: A New Approach to Social Welfare Policy and Planning in America, and his essays, book chapters, journal articles, and book reviews have been widely published in professional journals, collections, and monographs.
