On 10 June 1986 the image of the rail network of London and the South East of England was overhauled, officially launched by Chris Green in a blaze of publicity at Waterloo station. Stations were to be upgraded or totally rebuilt and new ones added to the network. New rolling stock was to be built to replace the tired and old trains of the South East. Network SouthEast certainly delivered on its promises during its short eight-year life.

Network SouthEast truly changed the way railways were operated and laid the foundations for the railway of today. Mark Battle illustrates this story with vibrant images and personal recollections.

Mark Battle was fifteen years old when Network SouthEast was created and witnessed the change and development of the rail sector throughout its 8 year life. Mark now lives in Yorkshire with his family and is a volunteer at the National Railway Museum.
