This is a facsimile reprint of the 18th-century classic first published in 1779. Originally conceived as a revision of Sir Roger Atkyns' 'Ancient and Present State of Gloustershire,' Samuel Rudder's 'New History' grew into a major work in its own right, containing vivid descriptions of baronial seats, information on genealogy and heraldry and more.

Samuel Rudder was born in Uley, near Dursley, in 1726 and by 1749 he was established as a printer and bookseller in Cirencester; he also sold patent medicines, groceries and other goods and worked as an auctioneer. He was a respected memeber of the local community and was a trustee of one of the town charities and treasurer of a local prosecution society. He died in Chelsea in 1801.
