This book is concerned with defining the nature of the crisis of the Arab world, with tracing its possible development, and with charting the conditions of its possible outcomes, addressing the next decade from the vantage of 1986 rather than that of 1985.

Hisham Sharabi earned a Ph.D. in the history of culture at the University of Chicago. He is a professor of history at Georgetown University and has taught at the American University of Beirut. At present, he is also editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies. Dr. Sharabi has written extensively on the Arab world; among his works are Nationalism and Revolution in the Arab World, Palestine and Israel: The Lethal Dilemma, and Arab Intellectuals and the West.
