"he / him / they / them / him / they / he / us / you / I don't know / how do you keep getting this so wrong?"

Nice Things: A Queer Love Story finds a gay couple, in the midst of their comfortable years. The two of them have everything; a beautiful flat, three holidays a year and truly envious Instagram grids. Nothing could ripple their idealistic world. Except for each other.

When one of them comes out as nonbinary, their idealised gay picket fence life begins to crumble. How do we deal with drastic changes in someone we love apparently unconditionally? Are they really that drastic? Does it actually change anything? Do they actually want all that...stuff anyway? Isn't it better if your partner is just themself? Isn't that what you love about them? Maybe. But maybe not that much themself.

This edition was published to coincide with the premiere production at The Pleasance, London and Porters in Cardiff in April 2026

Luke Hereford trained in Musical Theatre at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Following a sold out run at Wales Millennium Centre, Luke’s solo, autobiographical queer cabaret play Grandmother’s Closet will run at Summerhall during Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2022. As a Director, Luke has worked with Sherman Theatre, Lincoln Center Theatre, New York, The Tron, Glasgow and is an Associate Artist for Leeway Productions. Luke is also a Drag Artist, and his Drag persona Esther Parade recently performed a full-length Cabaret night at Above the Stag, Vauxhall, and was a national Semi-Finalist for UK Drag Idol.
