In an age marked by fragmentation, loneliness, and ecological crisis, Nurturing the Beloved Community offers a grounded and hopeful vision for reclaiming the practices of shared life. Drawing on over three decades of experience in residential intentional communities, Jonathan weaves together personal stories, practical wisdom, and deep spiritual insight to explore the virtues that sustain resilient communities.
Rooted in Christian contemplative traditions, he offers a rich, lived reflection on how vision, boundaries, humility, trust, need, work, gratitude, and celebration can shape healthy and enduring communal life. Each chapter integrates real-world experience with theological depth, offering both inspiration and concrete steps for individuals and groups seeking to live more intentionally.
Whether you're hoping to strengthen your local church, start a new intentional community, deepen your shared life with others, or simply live with more purpose and connection, Nurturing the Beloved Community speaks to anyone longing for a way of living that is relational, rooted, and resilient.
A practical, story-rich, and spiritually grounded guide for anyone who believes a better way of living together is possible.
Jonathan Herbert lives in the Hilfield Franciscan Community, from where he works as Chaplain to Gypsies and Travellers in the Diocese of Salisbury. Prior to that he was leader of the Pilsdon Community. He leads retreats, enjoys construction work and restoration of natural habitats, is a weaver and basket maker and involved in climate protest.
