OUCH! My Tummy Hurts is intended to help inform children about the medical world. It is the first book in the ‘To the Doctors’ series that tells the tale of fictional characters going to the doctors to get their aches, pains or their problem seen to by a doctor. In this story, avid football player Oliver Price has a mysterious tummy ache and loss of appetite. This book follows him ‘to the doctors’ and throughout his medical journey towards making a full recovery from his diagnosis… The aim of this series is to dissolve children’s fears and help educate them on medical problems including, but not limited to, disabilities, injuries and procedures. It aims to target curious kids, patients and perhaps even aspiring doctors. Of course, this series is not a substitute for medical advice and parents should always take medical concerns to healthcare professionals. This series will simply outline the process of dealing with medical issues in a child-friendly story format to help ‘establish the unestablished’ for children who may be fearful of the unknown and to even inspire children to go into a medical profession. This book in particular focuses on Oliver, an avid football player, and his mysterious tummy ache...
Hello! My name, as you probably already know, is Areej. I’m twelve years old and I was born in the UK. I moved to Qatar when I was eight years old and I moved to Canada in June 2021. I’m sure you’re probably wondering how a twelve-year-old girl has possibly written a book on medicine? I was struck with the idea to write a story about surgery when my dad, who is a General Surgeon, was talking to me about his endeavours in the field of medical non-fiction. I have created a series, this being the first of hopefully many books for children about medical problems and how they are dealt with. This book is aimed to help young people see the medical world and vicariously experience what being a paediatric patient feels like.
