For almost a decade a dedicated team of scholars has been collecting and documenting Davis' papers and correspondence for this multi-volume work. Haskell M. Monroe, Jr., was professor of history and dean of faculties emeritus at Texas A&M University. He also served as president of the University of Texas at El Paso and chancellor of the University of Missouri. He was coeditor of volume 1 of The Papers of Jefferson Davis.
