Twelve-year-old Paulina is delivering bread to her new friend Fabia’s home when the air begins to fill with smoke and ash. Mount Vesuvius is erupting! Fabia’s father leaves to help fellow Pompeii residents evacuate, telling the girls to make their way to the port where they can board boats to escape. But Paulina cannot leave her family behind. The two girls make their way through the city, helping others where they can. Will they escape the volcano disaster and be reunited with their loved ones? Part of the Girls Survive Graphic Novel series, Paulina and the Disaster at Pompeii brings a defining historical even to life.
Barbara Perez Marquez was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. Now she lives in Baltimore, Maryland. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Manhattanville College and writes short stories and fiction, usually using coming of age and LGBTQ themes in her work. During her career, she has also served as editor for several publications and projects. She’s part of the team behind the acclaimed graphic novel series, The Cardboard Kingdom, and is hard at work on her next projects. Markia Jenai was raised in Detroit, Michigan, during rough times but found adventure through art, drawing, and storytelling. Those interests led her to study at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. An avid lover of fantasy settings, cultures, and mythology, Markia has made it her goal to create worlds where people of color are front and center. Diversity within her art means the world to her, and she dreams of the day when everyone will see themselves in media and have the same access to telling their own stories.
