Perception and Communication in Intercultural Spaces explores the ways in which cultural values and beliefs influence communication. It captures intercultural communication in everyday contexts by introducing the concept of intercultural spaces. The book does not prescribe "ten easy steps" to effective intercultural communication; rather, it discusses the what and the why of intercultural issues in the hope that the readers can adapt their understanding to suit their own contexts, given that the specific ways intercultural issues unfold are as varied as the contexts in which the readers may find themselves. The book includes a discussion of theoretical frameworks in the areas of culture, cognition, and communication, as well as the practical application of these frameworks with the use of conversations, critical incidents, and short stories.
Lily A. Arasaratnam, Ph.D. (Communication), is currently the Director of the Master of Arts (Christian Studies) program at Alphacrucis College and a Research Fellow at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Her area of expertise is intercultural communication with a background in psychology and mathematics.
