From the Foreword to the second edition: The present work was intended to be a complete phonological description of a Hungarian dialect spoken in the village of Kolon. The twofold aim of this study was to test the validity of some basic tenets of phonology and to determine the practical value of their application. While the application of phonology showed some notable partial results, it also demonstrated the lack of an adequate and fully applicable phonological theory. Several signatures of the first edition of this work were destroyed during World War II; altogether forty complete copies were published. In the present edition, the entire text of the original version appears unaltered.
