In recent years, Europe has been buffeted by a series of contested crises that seemingly undermine and overwhelm its institutions and ideals: the economic shocks of 2008, the open disputes over migration, the political uncertainty generated by Brexit and the inroads made by various populist and nationalist parties into government.

Amanda Machin is acting Professor of International Political Studies at the PPE Institute for Social and Institutional Change (ISIC) the University of Witten/Herdecke in Germany. Her research focuses upon the topics and interconnections between democracy, environment, identification and embodiment.
Nadine Meidert is a postdoctoral researcher and head of the Simulation Game Lab at Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen in Germany. Her main research interest is political sociology with a focus on political participation, attitudes and identity.
