This text advocates the use of social learning theories to improve interpersonal behaviors of young African-American males. It is firmly believed by the author that intervention must be early if inappropriate behaviors are to be changed. Social learning theories offer a context in which this can be accomplished. These theories are designed to promote acceptable social behaviors in different types of social situations. Specific strategies and activities have been outlined in the text to promote the major components of social learning theories in the classroom or school. The text infuses social learning strategies into a common context through which social skills strategies can be integrated into the instructional program, with emphasis on early intervention.
George R. Taylor is Professor of Special Education, Coppin State College, Baltimore, Maryland.
