Sexual violence is a widespread yet poorly addressed issue in UK universities, affecting a significant proportion of students, especially women and non-binary people. Grounded in feminist theory and student voices, this book explores how universities can better respond to sexual violence through prevention and education.

Drawing on a rich dataset of research at elite universities, the book examines the everyday realities of sexual violence – from banter and groping to troubling attitudes toward consent – and critiques dominant behaviours such as lad culture. It proposes a new model rooted in sexual ethics, citizenship and hybrid masculinities, offering practical, policy-relevant insights for creating safer university communities.

Alice King is Senior Researcher at the Legal Services Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia. She completed her PhD at the University of Warwick and has also held positions at the University of York and Monash University.
