The history of research on the pupillary light reflex goes back to 1765. Since 1960, particularly after 1965, the interest of psychologists and other behavioral and social scientists in the pupillometry response had increased enormously. Originally published in 1977, Pupillometry offered an extensive review and assessment of the existing psychological research on the pupil, focusing not only on recent work, but also summarizing and evaluating much research that, up until then, was unpublished or unavailable. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Michel Janisse was born in Windsor, ON and received a doctorate in Psychology from the University of Waterloo in 1970. He spent the bulk of his research career at the University of Manitoba studying Health Psychology, publishing several books and dozens of research articles related to stress, anxiety, personality, emotion, lie detection, and health. He was also Dean of Continuing Education at the University of Manitoba for eight years, Director of Co-operative Education at the University of Victoria, served as Dean of Arts and Science at University Canada West, and was the first President of the LINC Universities Foundation.
