The Read Write Inc. Phonics Sound Blending Books provide extra practice for children who are beginning to blend confidently. The books are designed to build accuracy, fluency and confidence before children move on to reading full decodable texts.
The Sound Blending Books are simple, one-word-per-page books for individual or partner practice. Each word is first shown on the right-hand page. When the child turns the page, they will see the word again, this time with any digraphs ('special friends') underlined and an accompanying picture so they can check they have read the word correctly.
There are ten books in the series, progressing in complexity from simple CVC words, to CVC words with digraphs, to CVCC/CCVC words and beyond. The books should be used after children can confidently blend using the Nursery Green Word Cards, and before they begin reading the Red Ditty Books.

Ruth Miskin is one of the UKs leading authorities on teaching children to read. She has many years experience as a head teacher, teacher trainer and consultant in phonics and literacy, working with primary and secondary schools throughout the UK.
Ruth has been an adviser to the government on many aspects of literacy teaching since 1997. Her work has been featured both by Newsnight on BBC2 and Dispatches on Channel 4. Ruth was awarded an OBE for Services to Education in 2011.
