This story is part of Reading Champion, a series carefully linked to book bands to encourage independent reading skills, developed with Dr Sue Bodman and Glen Franklin of UCL Institute of Education (IOE). This book is aimed at Independent Reading 12, for readers aged 7 years old and up, or in the second half of Year 3.

Sarwat loves to solve mysteries. But what on earth is happening at his neighbours house? It surely seems haunted, but perhaps the spooky clues have another explanation? Sarwat is on the case!

Reading Champion offers independent reading books for children to practise and reinforce their developing reading skills.

Fantastic, original stories are accompanied by engaging artwork and a reading activity. Each book has been carefully graded so that it can be matched to a child's reading ability, encouraging reading for pleasure.

The Key Stage 2 Reading Champion Books are suggested for use as follows:
Independent Reading 11: start of Year 3 or age 7+
Independent Reading 12: end of Year 3 or age 7+
Independent Reading 13: start of Year 4 or age 8+
Independent Reading 14: end of Year 4 or age 8+
Independent Reading 15: start of Year 5 or age 9+
Independent Reading 16: end of Year 5 or age 9+
Independent Reading 17: start of Year 6 or age 10+
Independent Reading 18: end of Year 6 or age 10+

Katie Dale had her first poem 'The Fate of The School Hamster' published in The Cadbury's Book of Children's Poetry, aged 8 and hasn't stopped writing since. On graduating, she went travelling through South-East Asia - only to discover whilst in a Vietnam internet cafe that she was a winner of the SCBWI 2008 Undiscovered Voices competition. I was born and grew up in Hong Kong and have been drawing ever since I was able to pick up a pen. An early medieval archaeologist by training, I bring my love for the human past, cultures, and folklore to my art. My paintings are done mostly digitally, starting with a darker background colour and gradually adding light to it. However, I find that creativity comes more naturally to me when I have a pencil in hand, so I often sketch my concepts on paper first before turning to the computer. When I am not drawing or painting, I love reading fantasy novels, volunteering in museums, and drinking too much tea. I now live in Oxford with my husband and our two affectionate cats Miso and Mochi.
