The abundant Roman inscriptions to be found in British museums tell us much about the everyday life of the inhabitants of Roman Britain - about their hopes and fears, their work and their beliefs. Nor is a fluent command of Latin essential for understanding their meaning. JOHN ROGAN read History and Theology at the University of Durham. He is an Occasional Lecturer at the University of Bristol and The Worker's Educational Association and has produced anumber of articles and books. He is a former provost of St Paul's Cathedral, Dundee.
