Mr. Casson's book is designed to show that the prehistoric and Hellenic sites in the island deserve much more notice than they have received. Mr. Casson emphasises the peculiarities of Cypriote art and usage; the Greeks evidently had reason to regard the Cypriote " character " or style as exceptional. Mr. Casson's illustrations of sculptures at Nicosia and in London show that his tempered praise of Cypriote art is justified.

Stanley Casson (7 May 1889-17 April 1944) is a British archaeologist.

After his studies in Oxford , he obtained a scholarship from the British School at Athens and specializes in sculpture and classical architecture and Byzantine art .

Reader at Oxford, professor at Bowdoin College (1933-1934), he joined the Intelligence Corps in 1939 and served with the British mission in the Greek army. He was killed in action on 17 April 1944 in the crash at sea of his plane near the coast of Cornwall.
