This book is an attempt to bring together from many sources some of the more prominent features of the social, religious, and literary background of the New Testament – an endeavour to capture so far as is possible the atmosphere of thought and feeling in which our Lord and His contemporaries lived.

Bindley, Thomas Herbert was born on October 21, 1861, son of late T. R. Bourne Bindley. He studied at Merton College, Oxford. Master of Arts. Curate of Ixworth, Suffolk, 1889. Canon of Barbados, 1893. Before Ordination engaged in literary work.

Contributor to Church Quarterly Review, Guardian, Times, Expositor, Journal of Theological Studies. Principal of Codrington College, 1890-1909. D. D.; Archdeacon of Barbados since 1904; Examining Chaplain to the Lord Bishop of Barbados.
