Provides an account of the events that had taken place in William Ewart Gladstone's life, from his childhood, education and early political influences through to his roles as leader of Liberal Party and prime minister in three governments. This biography reveals the moral authority Gladstone stamped upon politics during his career through reforms.

George William Erskine Russell (1853-1919) was a Liberal Party politician and a relation of Lord John Russell (twice prime minister during the nineteenth century). In addition to Parliament he was considered influential in many spheres: as a prominent member of London County Council, as a respected Anglican lay reader and as a gifted writer and journalist. He made frequent contributions to the Manchester Guardian and produced several biographies of great men of his time.
