ROAD TO ROUEN: Fans of one or more of the following should find something to enjoy in this set of stories: motorcycling, jazz, Belgium, wordplay, Early Music, the Dutch, aesthetics, Tallis' 40-part motet, East Africa, ribaldry, bars, the Book of Psalms, mildly uncharitable observation, very high speaking voices, and sausage rolls.

Matthew Vine joined Godalming church choir at the age of 6, where his father Jim Vine was organist. He became Head Chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral, London, and later on a member of the choirs of Christ Church, Oxford and Westminster Cathedral. He has worked as a dispatch rider, nightclub saxophonist and music examiner while his fanaticisms have ranged from football, motorbikes and aircraft, to learning Spanish, the works of Harold Pinter and the art of Breughel. He is married, with a tall son and two small daughters.
