Inspire a love of geology with this guided journal that teaches children to observe, record, draw, and learn about rocks and minerals.
Turn every rock-hunting walk, beach trip, museum visit, camping adventure, or backyard discovery into a treasured memory. Rock Log Kids gives children a fun, easy way to notice rocks and minerals, write about what they find, and draw or photograph their discoveries.
Designed for ages 5 to 12, this guided logbook helps kids record where a rock or mineral was found, what it looked and felt like, what colors it had, whether it was shiny or dull, and whether it had crystals, bands, layers, veins, or other special features. Along the way, young rockhounds will also find fascinating geology facts, hands-on activities, and kid-friendly explanations of rocks, minerals, the rock cycle, hardness, famous rock formations, and more.
Perfect for family time, school science studies, backyard exploring, and other screen-free learning fun, Rock Log Kids by Daniel P. Brandt and DeAnna Ortiz Brandt helps children slow down, look closely, and create a one-of-a-kind keepsake worth cherishing.
Inside you’ll find:
- 60 guided log pages (30 entries) for recording rock and mineral discoveries, observations, drawings, and photos
- Life List to track up to 30 rocks and minerals at a glance
- Geology facts and activities that encourage curiosity, creativity, observation skills, and hands-on learning
- Photo/Art pages for sketches, pictures, extra notes, and keepsake creations

Daniel P. Brandt grew up in the woods of Minnesota. He has worked with children during summer park programs and is a freelance graphic designer. He and his brother were the inspiration for and first users of the Nature Journals series.
DeAnna Ortiz Brandt is an artist and an author. She and her husband raised their sons in the woods, which provided endless nature encounters. Her Nature Journals were created from a desire to record those experiences.
