Burnley conquered the Football League in 1960 in the last match of the season. They had used only eighteen players – almost all of the young team had been schooled through the famous Burnley youth system and none had arrived on big transfers.
It was a staggering achievement for the small Lancashire mill town club and was based on a system of total football which was years ahead of its time.
Burnley’s autocratic chairman Bob Lord said that Burnley had always been famous for two things – cotton and the Burnley Building Society. Now it would be remembered for its football team.
He wasn’t far wrong.
