This book examines the factors and issues responsible for the intra-Palestinian conflict that has undermined the strength and vitality of the struggle for liberation against the state of Israel. It explores how the ideological incompatibility and competition for political primacy account for the Hamas–Fatah conflict, entailing the risk of partition of Palestine even before it takes shape as an independent, sovereign entity. It analyzes the developments since the signing of the September 1993 Oslo Accord and discusses themes such as the background of Palestinian politics; the role of Fatah; the rise of Hamas as Fatah’s political rival; the Hamas–Fatah struggle for power; and the role played by the international community, including by the US and the European Union. Subhash Singh is Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Centre for West Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. Funded by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, he is currently working on a project on "The Resetting of India’s National Security and the Role of Indo–Israel Relations, 1998–2014." In 2014, he completed his PhD on "Hamas and Fatah: Struggle for Power in Palestinian Politics, 1988–2010," and his MPhil on "Hamas in Palestinian Politics, 1996–2006" in 2010. His research interests include Palestinian politics, Arab–Israel conflict, international relations, India’s foreign policy, and the Indian political system. He has received several fellowships from the University Grants Commission and the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi. He has also contributed several research papers in journals and edited volumes on a variety of issues and has published two edited volumes.
