Although the Great War continues to attract a great deal of attention from historians, not a single history of Serbia in the First World War exists in English. The publication of Andrej Mitrovi's classic study on the subject, first published in Serbo-Croat in 1984, is therefore both long - overdue and timely. This book is the most complete, single-volume political, social and diplomatic history of Serbia during this crucial period that exists in any language. Professor Mitrovi - a leading Serbian historian whose work is highly regarded across the former-Yugoslavia and in continental Europe - has based his book on an impressive range of primary and secondary sources. He writes with authority, offering a wealth of information. This book deals with a number of key questions, including: the origins of the war; the epic retreat of the winter of 1915/16; internal struggles within the exiled Serbian leadership and its relationship with the Entente governments; the nature of the Central Powers' occupation of Serbia, the resistance and collaboration; Serbia's relationship with Montenegro and with Habsburg South Slavs; and, the origins of the Yugoslav state.
Andrej Mitrovi? is Chair and Professor of Modern History at the University of Belgrade. He has written widely on the First World War and the Paris Peace Conference, on interwar Europe, and is the author of books and articles on economic, social, and cultural history and on historiography. In 2001 Professor Mitrovi? received the prestigious Herder Prize from the University of Vienna and the Alfred Toepfer Foundation of Hamburg, Germany. In 2004 Germany's Southeast Europe Association awarded him the Konstantin Jiricek Medal.
