Shine is an African American folk character who emerged after World War I in toasts, blues, folk poetry, and children's rhymes. In his new book of poems, Calvin Forbes reinvents Shine, giving him a girlfriend, Glow, and a child, Shade. Calvin Forbes's first book of poems is Blue Monday. He is an associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he teaches writing, literature, and jazz history. A recipient of grants from the Illinois Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, he has been a Fulbright teaching fellow and for several years served on the board of the Poetry Center in Chicago.
