Charting the changing fortunes of about 30 towns in Somerset over 1000 years, this title explores the reasons why, right up to the 18th century, it remained a county of small towns.

Tony Scrase lives in Bristol and has published several books on Wells. He was a founder member of what became the Department of Town and Country Planning at Bristol Polytechnic, where he became Principal Lecturer. When the department became part of the Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of the West of England, he became a member of the Faculty's School of geography.
