This book is about various social customs which were prevalent in South India in earlier times. The author has endeavoured to give an explanation pertaining to the rationale of the customs. Some of the customs, the author elaborates upon, are rituals relating to evil eye and chanting various mantras, etc. Other common customs included are wearing caste marks, visiting with presents, going on pilgrimages, customs related to money, planting margosa tree outside one's house, heralding of ceremonies with playing of drums, metal discs, etc., marriage, birth and death customs, early morning decorating floor of the frontyard of the house and many other customs, some of which are obsolete now.
P.V. Jagadisa Ayyar was also the author of South Indian Shrines.
