Different aspects of linguistic standardization are pointed out on the basis of case studies of linguistic transfers into Finnish, Latvian, Lithuanian and Icelandic. The sociolinguistic contributions selected from a conference do not merely deal with translation studies but with the question how smaller linguistic communities overcome the challenges of safeguarding their linguistic identity while becoming heterogeneous in the wake of European mobility.
