These short meditations by Donald McChesney on the Stations of the Cross originally published in 1971 are accompanied in this new edition by the extraordinary and moving artwork of Jean-Bernard Lalanne from his exhibition entitled ‘Compassion’ at the Chapelle Notre-dame de la Pitié, Seix, Ariège, in August 2024.
Donald McChesney was a Roman Catholic. He wrote widely on Paul Tillich, Teilhard de Chardin and Gerard Manley Hopkins, among other subjects, and a book on the latter, A Hopkins Commentary; an explanatory commentary on the main poems (University of London Press, 1968). He was Senior Lecturer at the De La Salle College, Middleton, Manchester.
Jean-Bernard Lalanne studied art for two years as a teenager, after which his father was advised not to allow him to continue, but to encourage him into a different career. He spent his working life therefore with the French National Police, and it was only in retirement that he returned to painting. He exhibits widely and is now internationally recognised.
