Everyone says that your time in higher education will be the best years of your life. But in reality, it can be a tough transition – and with the isolation and stress that comes from being thrust into a new environment, it might feel impossible to keep low moods and negative feelings under control.

In this supportive and easy-to-read guide, award-winning student mental health expert Dr Dominique Thompson helps you understand the potential sources of depression, and the ways in which it may be affecting you.

She includes students’ personal accounts of their depression and how they learned to manage it – a strong reminder that you are not alone in the way you feel. With practical tips and exercises, you too can build a toolkit that will lift you out of a dark place and improve your mental health.

This book will help you gain real power over your depression so that you can enjoy the full student experience – on your terms.

Dr Dominique Thompson has worked with university students for nearly two decades, and in 2017 contributed towards a landmark report on the nation’s student wellbeing, as well as being involved in the Mental Wellbeing in Higher Education working group of Universities UK. Dr Thompson now works with universities across the UK on their mental health strategies, as well as providing training to university staff. She was named Bristol Healthcare Professional of the Year 2017. In 2019 she was nominated as one of the Top 100 West Women of the Year. Dominique has helped design apps and websites to support student mental health and writes books on the topic. She has been interviewed widely, including by The Guardian and BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. Her books are written with the aim of helping young people and their parents to feel more supported when dealing with stress, gaining independence and resilience.
