This book warns of a future where the hardest schools for Australian parents to get their kids into will be public ones. With insight, passion and a great sense of urgency, Chris Bonnor and Jane Caro show how government, anxious parents, the church and ideology are combining to undermine public schools.""The Stupid Country"" is not a one-sided defence of public education. But it challenges us to consider whether we really want to continue stumbling blindly down our current path, risking the health of our public schools and everything they have created - our prosperity, unity, stability - even, perhaps, our democracy.
Chris Bonnor AM is an education writer and consultant with wide experience in teaching and school leadership. His interests and research have spanned geography, gender education and education systems and he has presented at many conferences in Australia and overseas. Chris is the author of ten geography textbooks, is a member of the Australian College of Educators and was most recently was the president of the NSW Secondary Principals Council. Jane Caro is an award-winning advertising writer with 25 years experience. Her interests include education, women, children, families, advertising, marketing and ideas of all kinds. She also writes on educational and other issues for a range of publications, including newspapers and New Matilda, and is a regular commentator on radio. Jane is a product of the NSW public education system, including a free university education. She is also the parent of two teenage daughters, educated in NSW public schools.
