T&T Clark Reader in Political Theology

T&T Clark Reader in Political Theology brings together some of the most important, up-to-date scholarly texts published in this field. Edited by leading academics – Phillips, Rowlands and Daughton – this single-volume reader fills the gap in the existing literature and provides a broad introductory selection to encourage critical comprehension of the relationship between theology and the political.

Including readings from Augustine, Aquinas, Martin Luther, Carl Schmitt, Jürgen Moltmann, Dorothee Sölle, Dorothy Day, John Howard Yoder, Reinhold Niebuhr and Stanley Hauerwas, this reader analyses and discusses major patristic, medieval and modern texts and figures from the field of political theology. These texts are grouped by topic – from the politics of Jesus, the Church and the political, and liberalism, to liberation and oppression – in order to allow students and scholars alike to gain a clear understanding of key themes and movements within the subject.

By presenting a range of pedagogical features – introductions, suggestions for further readings, discussion questions – this text will not only allow students to gain an understanding of the history of the subject, but also the ability to read, interpret and critically engage with the major issues in political theology.

Elizabeth Phillips is Director of Studies at Westcott House and Research Associate at the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology, Cambridge, UK. She is an Honorary Fellow of the Department of Theology and Religion, Durham University, UK and author of Political Theology: A Guide for the Perplexed (T&T Clark, 2012).

Anna Rowlands is St Hilda Associate Professor of Catholic Social Thought and Practice in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the Durham University, UK and Chair of the UK Centre for Catholic Social Thought and Practice. She is author of Towards a Politics of Communion: Catholic Social Teaching in Dark Times (forthcoming).

Amy Daughton is Lecturer in Practical Theology in the School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion at the University of Birmingham, UK, and Research Associate with the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology in Cambridge, UK. She is author of With and For Others (2016), which considers the work of Paul Ricoeur and Thomas Aquinas for intercultural hermeneutics.
