A ‘How to’ book featuring painting techniques used by Dutch Renaissance Masters such as Rembrandt and Rubens, Bruegel and Bosch.

This beautifully illustrated book for practising artists and art students examines everything there is to know about the techniques used by the Dutch Masters of the Golden Age. From the preparation of surfaces and the creation of paints and pigments to the methods used, award-winning artist Brigid Marlin considers how these skills can work in modern settings and includes stunning representations of contemporary artists’ work.

Discover the techniques and materials used by Rembrandt in his portraits, how to achieve balance and tension, rhythm and points of interest in the style of Bruegel and Rubens, and how to recreate luminous still-life paintings like those of the Van Eyck brothers. Projects include clear, step-by-step demonstrations to replicate these almost-forgotten techniques as well as examples of works which they inspired.

Brigid Marlin is an internationally acclaimed artist. Her early training took place in the leading art schools of Dublin, Paris and New York and she later studied with the famous visionary artist Ernst Fuchs in Vienna, before joining him as a teacher on his annual summer schools. She has exhibited, been an artist in residence, and taught in the UK, the USA and several other countries. Her portrait of the author J.G. Ballard sits in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, one of P.L. Travers hangs in Wellesley College in the USA and Lord Longford’s one is held in the House of Lords. Her works are also exhibited in the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and the National Museum of American Artists and Illustrators. Her full biography and examples of her work can be viewed on her website: www.brigidmarlin.com.
