Ellen Terry's correspondence was both exuberant and extensive. Her remaining letters provide a fascinating insight into the dynamics of the Victorian theatre, and the difficulties of life for a woman maintaining a successful public persona whilst raising two illegitimate children.
Katharine Cockin is Professor of English at the University of Hull, where her research interests include the British women's suffrage movement, the lives and work of Edith Craig and Ellen Terry and contemporary literature. For Pickering & Chatto she has published Ellen Terry: Spheres of Influence (ed.) (2011) and Ellen Terry: Lives of Shakespearian Actors (ed.) (2012). She is the Series Editor of Pickering & Chatto's series Dramatic Lives.
