Escorts Mk1 and Mk2 were built in huge numbers around the world, in Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. During the life of the models no less than 130 different variants were produced, ranging from the 2-door base model saloon through four-doors, vans and estates, campers and plush Ghia models to the highly desirable sporting versions like the Twin-Cam and RS models. Early childhood spent sliding across the seats of his dad's GT-engined Mk1 instilled an anorak-level addiction to fast Fords. Like most Escort enthusiasts, his condition is incurable. Dan was given his first car aged 15, a 1972 Mk1 that's perhaps best described as a long-term project. It currently shares garage space with a '71 Mexico and a 1600 Sport. Dan trained as a newspaper reporter before deciding it's more fun to write about cars. He's been a motoring journalist since 1997, working for the UK's leading automotive publishers. Today he's a freelance contributor to a variety of magazines, including Fast Ford.
