'Ingpen's drawings are utterly compelling' – Michael Morpurgo

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in Bombay, India, but was educated in England. In 1882 he returned to India and worked as a journalist. While there, he created stories, sketches and poems, which made him an instant literary celebrity. The Jungle Book, published in 1894, became a children's classic all over the world. Robert Ingpen was born in 1936 in Geelong, Australia, and still lives and works nearby in Barwon Heads. In 1986 he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children's literature and he has been honoured with Membership of the Order of Australia.
