Originally published in 1932, this volume The World's Economic Crisis: and the Way of Escape contains six lectures delivered under the auspices of the Sir Halley Stewart Trust in 1931. The trust was founded in 1924 for research towards the Christian ideal in all social life. All distinguished economists of the time this book is an excellent view of the world in the early twentieth century. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

Sir Arthur Salter (18811975) was a British civil servant politician and academic who was a significant politician behind the concept of European political union. Sir Josiah Stamp (18801941) was an English industrialist economist civil servant statistician writer and banker. Stamp was widely regarded as the leading British expert on taxation and took an active part in the work of the Royal Statistical Society serving as president from 1930 to 1932.John Maynard Keynes (18831946) was an English economist and philosopher whose ideas fundamentally changed the theory and practice of macroeconomics and the economic policies of governments.Sir Basil Blackett (18821935) was a British civil servant and expert on international finance.Henry Clay (18831954) was a British economist and Warden of Nuffield College Oxford. Between 1930 and 1944 he worked as an economic adviser to the Bank of England.Sir William Henry Beveridge (18791963) was a key figure in the modernization of British economic and social policy who published widely on unemployment and social security. His 1942 report Social Insurance and Allied Services (known as the Beveridge Report) served as the basis for the welfare state put in place by the Labour government elected in 1945.
