Theory Can Only Take You So Far clearly defines the instructional system teachers need. It starts by acknowledging the crisis, describes school and classroom systems, and then provides a chapter-by-chapter description of what research, evidence, and some support from AI point to as the most effective practices that make up an instructional system.

With two decades of experience in education, Patrick Mongrain has served in a wide range of roles both in and out of the classroom. For eleven years, he taught middle school history, leadership, and AVID, with four of those years also spent as a part-time teacher and PBIS Coach. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, they coached football, boys and girls basketball, and track.
Beyond the classroom, Patrick Mongrain has held several district-level positions, including Safe and Supportive Instructional Coach, Restorative Justice Specialist, School Systems Coach, and Professional Learning Teacher on Special Assignment. These roles were supported by extensive professional training. Highlights include earning an AVID Implementation Certificate and completing strands in history, reading, and writing; attending multiple PBIS conferences, such as Northwest PBIS, the Midwest PBIS Forum, and the national APBS Conference; obtaining CAST UDL Certification (Levels 1 and 2); and becoming a certified Restorative Justice trainer.
