There Is Room is the first comprehensive monograph on Chicago-based design firm Kwong Von Glinow. Their work spans residential, civic, and cultural projects, and has been widely recognised for inventive spatial typologies, rigorous model-based design processes, and a deep engagement with the architectural fabric of Chicago.

The book captures Kwong Von Glinow’s work since 2017 through models, drawings, construction photography, narrative texts, and essays. Structured across four chapters, it documents 41 of their designs. Some 250 images and a sequence that moves from conceptual models to built work offer a close reading of Kwong Von Glinow’s design approach: rigorous formal investigation, a commitment to spatial clarity, and a sensitivity to Chicago’s residential vernacular. Interspersed essays contextualise the firm’s work within broader architectural typologies, including an extended reflection on the “developer typologies” that shape Chicago’s built environment.

There Is Room is a portfolio of built and speculative work and a conceptual statement about space, domesticity, and architectural possibility in the contemporary city.

Kwong Von Glinow is a Chicago-based architecture practice founded in 2017 by Lap Chi Kwong and Alison Von Glinow. Both founding partners are also visiting design critics in at various architecture schools, such as Harvard GSD, Princeton University, University of Illinois Chicago, Tecnológico De Monterrey, and Southeast University in Nanjing.
