About Franklin Kelly

Franklin Kelly Christiane Ellis Valone Curator of American Paintings at the National Gallery of Art a leading authority on Thomas Cole and other Hudson River School artists has published definitive studies of the National Gallery's major Cole collection including an essay on images of Mt. Etna and a catalogue Thomas Cole's Paintings of Eden. Annette Blaugrund has written sixteen books about American art and artists. In 1992 she was named Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government and in 2008 the National Academy Museum where she was director for eleven years (1997-2007) honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. She holds a Ph.D. in art history from Columbia University where for six years she taught American art and currently sits on the Advisory Council of the Department of Art and Archeology. In 2019 she was elected Board President of ArtTable a national organization for women in the visual arts. Her most recent publications are The Way Back: The Paintings of George A. Weymouth (Rizzoli 2018) for the Brandywine River Museum of Art; and Thomas Cole: the Artist as Architect (Monacelli Press 2016) for which this book will be a sequel with newly discovered images and information. William L. Coleman is Director of Collections & Exhibitions at The Olana Partnership. He was previously Associate Curator of American Art at the Newark Museum. His published work has appeared in Huntington Library Quarterly Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide and The Routledge Companion to Music and Visual Culture. He earned his PhD from Berkeley after master's degrees from Oxford and the Courtauld Institute and a bachelor's from Haverford. Ideas from his dissertation Something of an Architect: Thomas Cole and the Country House Ideal will add new information to this book.
